Tempus Fluxus was composed as a vehicle for virtuosic piano performance; the title was used as an image during the composition process of “time in flux” or “flexible time.” Not all of the music showcases virtuosity; there are three main thematic ideas, and also a slow introduction that returns toward the end. The first theme (after the introduction), is reminiscent of Bach-like contrapuntal rigor, but with modern language. The next theme is playful in a Prokofiev-like manner, while the third theme is slower and more thoughtful. The form of the work evolved during composition: My original idea began with a sonata-allegro type of format, but I found that the development wanted to unfold as a recapitulation of the themes—and so what we hear about half-way through is actually a hybrid development and recapitulation simultaneously. The return of the slow introductory music provides a sense of a modified arch form, and a short coda allows the pianist to shine before the double bar.
